Irish Examiner Christmas Cake Recipe Competition 2012

Get your spatulas primed and whisks at the ready if you’d like the chance to win a weekend away.

On Saturday last, 3 November 2012, the Irish Examiner launched their Christmas Cake Recipe Competition for 2012. The winner will win a luxury weekend away in Aghadoe Heights Hotel in Killarney.


The Irish Examiner food writers Darina Allen, Joe McNamee, Roz Crowley and Michelle Darmody are the judges for the competition. Speaking at the launch Darina Allen, spokesperson for the judging panel said:

“This is an exciting opportunity for amateur bakers to share their Christmas recipes, from old family favourites to new recipes developed to fit around busy lifestyles, changing dietary requirements and culinary experimentation.”

There are 4 categories which have been selected by the four judges above. You have the choice to enter one or all of the categories.

  1. Traditional – Your family’s Christmas cake recipe
  2. Quick – throw in a mixer, bake and eat
  3. Special Diet – Coeliac to vegan, share your innovations
  4. Creative – Wild and inspired, anything goes

Traditional – This category is unique to each entrant, as it is to be the Christmas cake that is eaten every year at your family’s Christmas celebration.

Quick – Must be prepared and baked from start to finish in 36 hours.

Special Diet – This must relate to a specific food allergy or food intolerance and use the relevant ingredients.

Creative – any cake that is invented by the entrant that has a Christmas them.


Winner: The overall prize includes a weekend break for two in a luxury suite at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa with breakfast, a bottle of sparking wine on arrival, afternoon tea and access to the thermal suite.

All Finalists: All finalists will receive a cookery goodie bag with delightful treats as well as having their recipe published on Irish Examiner.

One finalist from each category will present their winning cake at a coffee morning at the Irish Examiner offices in December.  The event will be open to the public with the proceeds going to charity.  The recipes of each of the four finalists will also be made available to download on the Irish Examiner website.
